I absolutely LOVE bulk shopping.
Many of the bulk stores in my area carry bulk spices, which saves a ton of money. Thing is, these bulk spices come in plastic containers that stack well, but are impossible to use if you need spices frequently (which I do).
So I decided to take control of the spices, get them organized and make them much easier to reach when cooking.
The key was so simple – and cost-effective – I could not believe I hadn’t thought of it before. (Of course, a few months after I did this, I found kits on Amazon to do it. Why didn’t I think of that?!)
I do a ton of canning and preserving and I have a lot of jars, from half pints to pints to quarters in both regular and wide mouth. Half pint jars worked perfectly for many of the spices. I had a small wooden basket with a handle that worked great to hold them and did not take a lot of room by the stove.
Reusable chalkboard labels and a bright chalkboard marker helped mark them for easy reading.
I had everything on hand already, so this was a very cheap, easy fix.
If you don’t have canning jars, use some old pasta sauce or olive jars you have lying around, just waiting to be used. I would definitely invest in either chalkboard labels, or Ball’s dissolvable labels, which come right after anytime you wash the jar. These are fairly inexpensive and will make organizing spices a dream.0
