I wish I could say I was brilliant enough to come up with this solution myself.
But I wasn’t.
Oh, I was half-way there, but I didn’t think of the trick to make this SUPER. EASY.
If you have hard water like we do, you probably struggle to keep your shower and shower head clean. Lime builds up so fast, it can be tough with which to keep up.
I use vinegar as my first defense. It works OK on the shower, but shower head is difficult. I usually douse a rag with vinegar and wrap it around the shower head.
This rarely works well. The pieces of cloth always get stuck in the shower holes somehow. The vinegar never seems to be able to penetrate the lime build up.
I thought I would have to give up.
The, I pulled out a book I have had for YEARS. (Books make it all better, right?)
Every time I find books with hints for the household, I pick them up – especially if they are a bargain. I always find helpful tips for building, organizing, cleaning – I even used one to buy a car years ago using a checklist I found in one section.
This time, I was flipping through, researching new ways I could use chemical-free cleaning products, when I stumbled upon a photo that would change my shower head-cleaning days forever.
(Well, it may not seem that dramatic, but if you saw my shower head today, you would be impressed!)
How to Clean a Shower Head without Chemicals
The Reader’s Digest The Family Handyman Helpful Hints had a picture of a bag secured around the shower head. The bag contained – you guessed it – vinegar. It was secured by a rubberband or something similar.
I immediately emptied the last of my vinegar into a small zip lock-style bag and grabbed a ponytail holder. My version looked like this:
Now, I would chose a bread tie or twine the next time around. I dumped a lot of vinegar on myself trying to secure the bag to the rod.
I pushed the bag up some after I took this photo and saw the vinegar was not fully covering the shower head. In two hours, most of the lime build up was gone.
The book recommends soaking overnight. I will do that next time.0
