Gannett columnist Anita Bruzzese authored a guest post at Chris Brogan's blog about how to use journalistic principles on your blog. In her post, she offers ten tips to bloggers to keep readers engaged and help build a solid, professional brand.
My favorite tip is the last one:
true. Your writing will last forever. Don’t abuse the privilege of
being able to record the events and feelings of our day. With every
word you write, you’re leaving a record for future generations, and
that’s not an assignment anyone should take lightly.
Your writing will last forever. Remember that each time you go online to post a blog on a social network, blogging program or post comments on at other blogs or online publications, you are leaving your mark. This is part of branding yourself as an author. Anything you put online could come back to haunt you, so always make it a point to be professional, courteous and keep your writing in line with your brand.
It is OK to share your personal opinions, but do not be offensive, or pick on others who feel differently. Readers, book reviewers, publicists, publishers and editors will remember snide comments, or off-colored humor that does not fit your brand.
Remember: Your attitude online could make – or break – that next big contract.0
